International singer-songwriter Sam Smith is reportedly engaged to designer Christian Cowan after more than three years of being together, according to entertainment reports.

The couple were seen attending the 2026 Met Gala, where engagement discussions were said to have surfaced publicly.

“From what I understand, it was a private engagement. They are over the moon, and from what I hear, so in love!” one source told entertainment outlet Page Six, a news confirmed by a second source.

Smith was also reportedly seen wearing an engagement ring featuring a yellow diamond believed to be from Cartier.

In a social media post about their Met Gala look, Smith quoted Cowan and highlighted the designer’s admiration for Russian-born French artist and designer Erté, who inspired the outfit.

“I love the way he brought costume art to the world through his visionary illustrations. The infamous 1920’s opulence and craft. 255,000 individual crystals and beads. 2,000 hours of artisanal hand sewing. This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam.”

Smith and Cowan were first linked in December 2022 when they were seen together at the White House during the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act by then-US President Joe Biden, a law that ensures federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages.

Smith, who came out as gay in 2014 and later as non-binary, made their red carpet debut with Cowan at the 2024 Met Gala. The pair have since attended subsequent editions of the event together.

The Grammy- and Oscar-winning artist is known for hit songs including “Stay With Me,” “I’m Not the Only One,” “Lay Me Down,” “Unholy,” “Too Good at Goodbyes,” and “Writing’s on the Wall.”
