MANILA — The International Criminal Court (ICC) Trial Chamber III has conducted the first status conference in the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte.
In a media report, it said that as in earlier proceedings, the 81-year-old former president did not appear in the hearing after the chamber allowed him to waive attendance.
The ICC said the status conference will set key procedural directions, including the commencement date of the trial and timelines leading up to it, as well as discussions on anticipated evidence, agreed facts, and language requirements for the parties.
It will also cover disclosure obligations, prosecution assessments on possible additional incidents, submission of trial briefs, pending motions, victim participation, and other procedural protocols.
“The status conference will be public. However, in order to avoid disclosure of sensitive information regarding witness protection and security issues, the Chamber may order the use of private sessions,” the Trial Chamber III said.
Duterte is facing charges of alleged crimes against humanity for murder and attempted murder in connection with his war on illegal drugs during his time as Davao City mayor and later as President.
The former leader is now represented by British lawyer Peter Haynes, following the withdrawal of lawyer Nicholas Kaufman.
