CEBU – Police recovered a firearm from a Grade 9 student during a school bag inspection in Pinamungajan, Cebu, on Aug. 20, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The PNP said the firearm was found inside the student’s school bag, prompting school administrators to immediately coordinate with authorities.
The firearm was recovered without ammunition and has been placed under police custody for safekeeping and proper disposition.
Initial investigation indicated that the firearm was allegedly owned by the student’s grandfather. Police are still verifying its ownership and the circumstances surrounding the minor’s possession of the weapon.
The PNP said appropriate accountability would be determined if the ownership and circumstances are established in accordance with existing laws.
The minor was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for appropriate intervention pursuant to Republic Act No. 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.
The student’s guardian and concerned barangay officials were also coordinated with, police said.
The PNP commended school personnel for their vigilance and immediate coordination with authorities, which allowed the incident to be promptly addressed.
Police reminded parents, guardians and firearm custodians to ensure that firearms are properly secured and kept inaccessible to children and unauthorized individuals.
The PNP also urged schools and communities to immediately coordinate with authorities when safety concerns arise.
The police organization said it would continue working with schools, families and communities to promote safe learning environments while protecting children’s rights and welfare.
