MANILA— One Filipino seafarer was killed while 21 other Filipino crew members escaped unharmed after an explosion struck a Marshall Islands-flagged oil products tanker in the Persian Gulf on Nov. 5, 2026, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported.
The MT VELOS SAPPHIRE was sailing toward Sitrah, Bahrain, when the explosion occurred in the early hours of Thursday. Initial reports suggested a possible drone attack, although the cause of the incident remains unverified.
The DMW said the licensed manning agency, which received the shipowner’s report of the fatality, had informed the deceased seafarer’s family and was providing assistance and guidance.
The shipowner also extended its condolences and assured the family of its support. No pollution or environmental damage was reported following the explosion.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac assured the bereaved family that the government would extend the necessary assistance, in accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to look after the families of Filipino seafarers.
“We will provide all the support and guidance the bereaved family needs during this difficult time. As the President has consistently reminded us, we must always take care of the families of our Filipino seafarers,” Secretary Cacdac said.
The DMW said it continues to coordinate with the shipowner and relevant authorities to monitor developments, establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion, and ensure that assistance reaches the bereaved family.
