MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) reiterated that the use of gadgets during class hours remains prohibited in public schools nationwide.
The agency said the policy is in line with DepEd Order No. 6, series of 2026, or the Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment (ESMLE).
In a memorandum, the DepEd said the guidelines aim to promote the safe and responsible use of the internet and related devices in schools.
According to the Office of the Secretary, the order “expressly prohibits the use of portable electronic devices during instructional hours by both learners and personnel.”
“This includes the prohibition of the usage of, but not limited to, social media, online games, content creation, and vlogging during class hours.”
The department said the use of gadgets will only be permitted for educational or emergency purposes.
For academic activities, students and personnel may use electronic devices to access educational platforms and digital learning resources or participate in authorized online collaborative activities.
The DepEd added that gadget use is also allowed during emergencies, including disasters, medical crises and other situations that require immediate communication for safety.
The agency also directed all field offices and public schools to strengthen information campaigns on the responsible use of the internet and related electronic devices nationwide.
